It’s an old one, but perhaps more relevant today than ever before. Especially within the world of structural biology. While many across the globe have worked tirelessly to help minimize the pain and suffering associated with the COVID-19 virus, researchers are also putting in countless hours in the lab. And in the weeks that followed the first reported case of COVID-19, scientists continue to conduct experiments that have had a profound impact on the world’s fight against this novel virus.

Using both X-ray crystallography and Cryo-EM, researchers from all around the world have been depositing structures of SARS-CoV-2 proteins at an amazing rate in the pursuit to uncover the structural secrets that will no doubt aid in solving this COVID dilemma. This month, we highlight just a few of these stories. From the multiple structures of the SARS-CoV-2 main protease which pave the way for the design of future therapeutics, to structures of the viral spike glycoprotein which provide molecular insights into viral entry and aid in the development of neutralizing antibodies against this virus. Stories like these are just a snapshot into the unbelievable amount of structural biology work that’s being done on these proteins in such a short time. It’s incredible to see how quickly these structures are being determined and deposited.
