HER2 gene encodes a member of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor family of receptor tyrosine kinases. It is overexpressed in 10-30% of all breast cancers, 29% of gastric and 10% of lung cancers.
An interesting study has shown that HER2 expression is dynamic in circulating breast cancer cells. In cell culture, HER2 negative cells propagated as multicellular colonies produced HER2 positive daughter cells when the colonies reached a certain cell density.
