8 Liver Diseases: Overview & Research Tools

Liver diseases, either acquired or inherited, follows through 4 specific stages which includes inflammation of liver, fibrosis, cirrhosis and end-stage.  Viral hepatitis, Alcoholic hepatitis, Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), Non-alcoholicsteatohepatitis (NASH) liver cirrhosis, Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), Acute Immune Hepatitis (AIH) and Cholestasis are key liver diseases ⁽¹⁾.

HSD17B

17β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases (HSD17Bs), a key enzyme in cholesterol and fatty acid metabolism, is upregulated in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).  Over expression of HSD17B13 is associated with lipid accumulation in liver.  Studies have shown that  HSD17B13 is a potential biomarker for advanced liver diseases such as NASH and liver cancer.  Read a post on HSD17B13
