NRP1: the new host factor for SARS-CoV-2

Multiple studies show  the interaction between Neuropilin-1 receptor (NRP1) and SARS-CoV-2 receptor.

NRPI is expressed in the respiratory and olfactory epithelial cells.  Cantuti-Castlelvetri et al. showed that the furin-cleaved S1 fragment of the spike proteins binds to NRP1.  In addition to small molecule inhibitors, the use of monoclonal antibodies to NRP1 reduced viral infection in cell culture.  Read the science paper.

In an another study, Moutal et al. show that the interaction between spike protein and NRP1 (also a VEGF-A receptor) suppress the VEGF-A binding and block VEGF-A/NRP1 signaling, antiallodynic in neuropathy pain model.  The study proposes that the silencing of pain could result in increased disease transmission in asymptomatic patients.  Read the paper.
