Summary:

graphic showing simultaneous separation of structural isomers and enantiomers of aminobutyric acid

Aminobutyric acid has five structural isomers and three enantiomers, each with its unique functionality. Therefore, there is a need for methods to separate and identify these. However, a simple method for separating and identifying all structural isomers and enantiomers and detecting them with high sensitivity using LC-MS has not been established until now. In this paper, we have established a method for separation and identification using LC-MS; after derivatization (labeling) with our optical separation labeling reagent L-FDVDA, HPLC analysis is done using a conventional C18 column. Furthermore, we were able to detect aminobutyric acid in human, mouse, and goat serum with higher sensitivity than existing chiral labeling agents, demonstrating differences in the aminobutyric acid contained in different animal species.
